It is said that a couple’s wedding décor should suit their wedding venue, and that their style and theme may affect their choice in selecting a wedding venue. That seems simple enough, but these two big-picture decisions will shape the ultimate look and feel of your entire wedding day. If you’re not a top-notch planner, don't worry! In this week’s blog post we ask Annegret, owner of Sitting Pretty, for her tips and advice on wedding décor and venues − and how the two go hand-in-hand.

Q: Can you name two venues where you have created a spectacular wedding space, keeping the venue’s architecture and design in mind when planning the décor, design and flowers?

CHRISTINE & FRIKKIE’S WEDDING AT 401 ROZENDAL

401 Rozendal is one of our favourite venues, not only because we have a standing partnership with them but we also love their look and different areas that they have available. A modern outer building was built 'over' the old wine cellar, creating an eclectic mix between new and old. So couples can go either way, or they can mix the modern and vintage looks. The venue also has some deep red feature walls which create a romantic ambience.

Q: What was your approach in transforming 401 Rozendal?

For Christine's wedding, we used deep hues of reds, purples, pinks, mustard and greens. That worked perfectly with some gold touches and the modern white tables from the venue. We particularly loved Christine's bridal bouquet with its mix of colours. When the venue has a lot of character, one can often go more minimalistic with the table décor.

SIEGLINDA & KOBUS’S WEDDING AT WATERKLOOF

Waterkloof is a stylish, modern winery situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains. One of its spectacular features is a glass box overlooking False Bay.

Q: What was your approach in transforming Waterkloof?

Although any look could work in such a clean space, we opted for a romantic, simple and chic look for Sieglinda and Kobus’s wedding. With soft pink tones and lots of candles and lighting, we created a warm atmosphere and an elegant look. We used mainly glass containers and just a few gold touches to add warmth. Definitely one of our favourite looks that could work in many venues.

Q: What advice would you give soon-to-be brides when deciding on the décor and flowers for their wedding venues?

Selecting a look or venue can be compared to the chicken-or-egg-first scenario. Some brides pick the venue and then decide on the look, others search for the perfect venue to suit their look. So it really depends on personal preference.

If however, the venue is chosen first, there are some elements to consider when deciding on a look. Number one is that your look should reflect your personal style as a couple, and, of course, fit your budget. Other things to consider are: the architecture of the space, the amount of light, any strong colours or artwork inside the space, the furniture the venue offers, and the shape of the tables.

Another question you could ask yourself is what feeling do you want to create? Glamorous or relaxed? Fancy or comfortable? Do you want your quests to feel like they are at a 5-star hotel, or at a party at your home? A look and style is often built on this foundation.

We advise you to look at different weddings held in the space before. That way you will get a good idea of what you like. When consulting with a décor and foral stylist, take some pictures along, but don't fix your ideas on Pinterest pictures alone. You have to think about the whole picture and how you are going to bring something of yourselves into the look. It can be a particular flower, colour or theme. When in doubt, keep it simple. As long as you look at your wedding and think, "this is us".
